Brief description and main aims

When the leadership team at theGood Shepherd Orphanage realized that some of the orphans were very talented and when given a push had the potential to use their gifts to benefit society, they decided to found the Football Academy. Currently they have a YouthAcademy consisting of teams from the under 12’s, to the under 17’s and a ladies team called the Shepherd Ladies. In 2007, the Management of Shepherd Stars Academy registered their senior side in the Awutu-Senya East third division league and were promoted after the first year into the second division, this despite their lack of facilities and equipment. It is very interesting to note that there are a lot of youth footballers in the rural areas who are so gifted in sports, especially football who could be nurtured to become as good as the best players Ghana has ever produced, if not better.

Main Activities

1.To make sure the God-given talents of the youth are not wasted.

2.Youth energies are not misused.

3.Unity and tolerance is preserved among the Ghanaian youth through sports and their capabilities used for national development.

4.The youth are educated and well-informed on the dangers associated with pre-marital sex and HIV/AIDS.

5.Friendship and unity is established among our players.

6.Our players are exposed to foreign clubs for trials and greener pastures.

7.The club qualifies to the Division One League and subsequently to the Premiershipby the year 2013

Volunteer’s Tasks

-assist the coaches with the football training

-assist with teaching or providing leisure activities for the kids when there is no football

Volunteers Requirements / Skills

The volunteer should have interest and skills in football. Furthermore the volunteer should be matured, open minded and a team player. Above all the volunteer should have patience or be willing to adapt to certain Ghanaian culture systems during his or her stay.

Hosting Situation (Board & Lodging)

The project would provide accommodation for the volunteers. Volunteers must also bear in mind that they may be sharing a room with another volunteer. The project in collaboration with ICYE GHANA will make provision for their feeding during their stay.
