Know Us

ICYE is a leader in international youth exchange programmes, with over 75 years of experience promoting global understanding, cultural exchange, and active citizenship among young people worldwide. Through its long-term and short-term volunteering opportunities, ICYE engages more than 2,000 participants annually across diverse cultural and social settings.
As an international federation of National Committees in 39 countries, ICYE operates through a strong global network coordinated by national offices and supported by dedicated co-workers. Volunteers receive comprehensive orientation, training, and ongoing support, ensuring a meaningful and well-guided experience throughout their journey.
ICYE’s programmes are designed to empower young people as active contributors to community development while fostering intercultural understanding. Through hands-on volunteering, participants gain practical skills, broaden their perspectives, and develop a deeper appreciation of different cultures.
The experience encourages personal growth, global awareness, and a strong commitment to peace and social justice. Volunteers return with valuable knowledge, lifelong connections, and a renewed sense of responsibility.

ICYE continues to build bridges across cultures, inspiring young people to make a positive and lasting impact in their communities and beyond.

How it works

ICYE is a Federation of Full and Associate Member National Committees. National Committees are autonomous. They develop and run the program according to the needs of the youth of their countries, and following policies and guidelines prepared and adopted by the General Assembly of the Federation. ICYE-GHANA joined the ICYE Federation in 1978, the first in Africa. ICYE-GHANA is registered as a non-profit organization with the country’s main body, The National Youth Organising Commission that oversees the running of youth programmes in the country. ICYE-GHANA is also listed with the Ministry of Social Welfare, a member of Ghana Private Voluntary Organisation in Development (GAPVOD) who serves as the umbrella for NGOs.

Our goals are consistent with that of the ICYE Federation which are the following

  • Breaking through barriers between cultures and people.
  • Justice for all persons who suffer from social, economic and personal injustice.
  • To promote dialogue and contact between young people from all over the world.
  • To develop the spirit of volunteerism among the youth.
  • To enable individuals to exhibit and acquire skills from the outside world.
  • To develop youth mobility tourism.
